What About The Children? was formed in 1994 as a result of a letter to the Guardian by Doreen Goodman expressing not only her horror at James Bulger's murder, but her concern at the evident lack of consistent loving care that his attackers, Thompson and Venables, had suffered throughout their young lives. They, too, were victims because their emotional needs were unmet during their crucial early years.
Since its formation, What About The Children? has concentrated on collecting and disseminating reliable information about the emotional needs of babies and young children under three, because it is during these early years that the foundations for empathy and the ability to make caring relationships are made.
We have worked to inform parents, professionals and policy makers, not only to prevent the roots of extreme criminal behaviour, but also to support ALL families to raise emotionally secure children who will grow up to become caring and responsible adults
